Texts – Latin

The Perseus Project is a very important source of Latin texts online. If you are looking for a Latin text, need a translation or a dictionary, or want to have words morphologically analysed, visit the site at either the link above or at this link.

Bibliotheca Augustana is the work of Ulrich Harsch of the Fachhochschule Augsburg. This virtual library holds a wide variety of literary texts, with Greek, Latin, German, French, English, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Russian texts available. This is a very important source of ancient literary texts.

The Latin Library, as its name suggests, is a well stocked virtual library of Latin texts. Christian, medieval and neo-Latin texts are included, alongside ancient ones. A separate section deals with Roman Law.

Forum Romanum The most interesting part of this website is the Corpus Scriptorum Latinorum, an apparently endless list of classical and medieval writers of Latin, with an overview of their work. If you cannot find the text you want on this website, it is probably not available on the Internet.

Image databases – Roman

Google images is a good place to find images of all kinds of subjects. Watch out for copyright issues, however!

Roman archaeology (museums and sites)

The British Museum offers various texts and images about some of its artefacts.

The Louvre maintains a set of resources and images online.

The Vatican Museums maintain an online presence here.

Lacus Curtius Bill Thayer’s website is rather off the wall, and you will find here many things which you will not find anywhere else. There are sections on many ancient sites in the Mediterranean here.

Odysseus This website, supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture is an excellent place to plan a trip to Greece or to research lesson material.

Encyclopedia mythica This encyclopaedia of mythology has more than 6000 definitions, perhaps the most extensive such offering on the Internet.

 

General sites

Enseigner les langues classiques This French site gives special attention to ICT and software. There is an extensive list of resources for all aspects of ancient civilisation, as well as methodological approaches to lesson planning and the use of multimedia in presenting classical texts.

KIRKE is hosted by the Institut für Klassische Philologie, at the Humboldt Universität in Berlin. It lists the considerable resources kept at Berlin.


Rassegna degli Strumenti Informatici per lo Studio dell'Antichità Classica

This Italian website is the work of Alessandro Cristofori, supported by the University of Bologna. It is well worth a visit.

Quia is a subscription site which allows for the creation of various resources and quizzes online, including those which can be shared with other teachers and schools.

Teaching Classics

Associations for Classical Teachers in Belgium and the Netherlands

 

The Vereniging van Leerkrachten Oude Talen (V.L.O.T.) is the association for teachers of ancient languages in Belgium, which has worked to support classical language teaching since 1996.

The Nederlands Klassiek Verbond is an association of classical teachers in The Netherlands, which also has dealings with teachers of Classics in Belgium.

Oudheid.nl was assembled on behalf of the Dutch Classical Teachers Association (Vereniging Classici Nederland). There is information about the work and intentions of the association, as well as other interesting materials.

The Vereniging Classici Nederland (VCN) is the association for Classics teachers in The Netherlands, which exists to promote the teaching of classical subjects in the modern world.

The Vereniging van Vrienden van het Gymnasium is an association of the Friends of the Gymnasium in The Netherlands. In this type of school classical languages are taught and information can be found about Classics on the site.

The Fédération des Professeurs de Grec et de Latin (FPGL) is an association for teachers of Greek and Latin in the French and German speaking areas of Belgium.

 

Teachers’ pages

 

Classica is a site with collections of links on classical languages and culture. There is an interesting section on Latin and Greek authors on the web. The site also hosts the Classici retiarii, a Dutch language webring for Belgian and Dutch classics teachers and students with a homepage. An overview of the members of the webring can be found here.

Websites Klassieke Oudheid is a simple and well constructed site, with set of links to other sites which are connected somehow with classical antiquity. The considerable research and hundreds of hours of work which have gone into making the site make it well worth visiting.

De Klassieken is a goldmine of links to other sites. Well worth visiting.

Wellinkiana
There is an enormous number of links from this site to other websites. The creator of the site has given consideration to classical antiquity but also to many other interesting websites.


De klassieke oudheid is aimed at students, teachers and other interested surfers, including information on the language and culture of the Greeks and Romans. Amongst other things a calendar of classical events in Belgium and abroad is kept here.

kox kollum en klassieken holds a wealth of information about Latin and Greek, often presented in a humorous way. The Latin Course (Cursus Latijn) has 100 lessons on Latin pronunciation. Particularly good is the Kox Kollum, a series of columns in which the personal experiences of classical authors are featured.

Satura lanx is Latin for "a plateful" and that is a fair description of this site. The section on PowerPoint holds a set of PowerPoint presentations submitted to the author by interested colleagues.

Cycade This somewhat confusing site hosts a great deal of material which could be useful for lessons.

 

University pages

The Griekenlandcentrum is an association led by the Classics department of the University of Gent. The main focus is the Greek world, from ancient times to modern.

The Classical Department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) – in Dutch.

Hodoi elektronikai, the Classical Department of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) – in French.

Grex, Community Klassieke Talen en KVC is a discussion group for Classical Teachers in the Netherlands

 

 

Training for Classical Teachers

In Flanders: Practical In-service training on ICT and Classics, with concrete exercises for students of classical languages, is provided annually by Josette Donné, Classics teacher and webmaster of the Sint-Bavohumaniora in Gent. An overview of Internet use is presented, including relevant sites, and attention is given to lesson plans, software usage for grammar teaching, reading of texts and ancient civilisation. Participants receive a package of information after the course, which can be implemented into their teaching programmes. LUMINA Vaklokaal klassieke talen en KCV considers the central examination system in The Netherlands for Greek and Latin, with links to other sites about classical languages. In the section tentoonstelling (exhibition) are details of exhibitions given in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
