1. The federal structure of Germany
Germany is a federal republic of 16 states (Bundesländern). They are, in alphabetical order: Baden-Württemberg; Bayern; Berlin; Brandenburg; Bremen; Hamburg; Hessen; Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; Nordrhein-Westfalen; Niedersachsen; Rheinland-Pfalz; Sachsen; Sachsen-Anhalt; Saarland; Schleswig-Holstein; Thüringen.
These states organise their own education. Each state has its own regulations, its own types of schools, subject matters, curricula, teacher training and holiday periods. Some people criticise this as "Kleinstaaterei", while others think it enhances competition between the states in education.
