![]() | Arlene teaches Latin and Classical Studies at Hamilton College, an Independent
school near Glasgow in the West of Scotland. Her students are 12 - 18
years old and study all aspects of the Classical world from Roman
toilets to Greek Olympics! Every year, Hamilton College students take
part in (and usually enjoy success in) national competitions -
for Latin and Greek declamation, as well as essay writing on various
topics. Arlene also offers Classical Greek and Italian to students of all ages as lunchtime clubs. This dovetails well with the bi-annual trips to Rome or Greece, where students aged 14 - 18 experience first-hand the splendour of Ancient Greece and Rome. Arlene has been teaching for a relatively short period of time but has already been recognised by the International Institute of Education in New York, receiving a Teaching STAR award in 2007. She combines her passion for all things Classical (particularly the politics of the Late Republic and the speeches of Cicero) with a vibrant enthusiasm for quality teaching and learning. Having studied at the Universities of Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge, she is delighted to share the benefit of her extensive academic experience with all students, from the very youngest to the eldest. When not working, travelling, gardening or socialising, she is a Doctoral student at the University of Glasgow where she is currently researching the value of Classical Greek for gifted and talented children. She hopes to be awarded her degree in 2012. Having participated in a cultural EU Comenius training course in Athens in 2007, Arlene was thrilled to be invited to participate in the CIRCE ICT course in Ljubljana where she hopes to learn lots of new 'tricks of the trade'! |
