Kokkie van Oeveren

Hello everybody, My name is Kokkie van Oeveren. I am a teacher of Latin, Greek and classical culture in Amsterdam in Holland. My pupils are between 12 and 18 years of age. Their training in the classics takes 6 years. They are obliged to take classes in Latin and Greek in the first three years. After that it is possible for them to choose one of the languages, but of course it is also possible to study both languages. I also work at the Vrije Universiteit (Free University) in Amsterdam. There I am a teacher trainer. Students who have finished their universtity education and want to become a teacher are obliged to train in teaching for a year. In this year I teach them didactics of Latin, Greek and classical civilisations. I think it is a very nice combination to be working at a school and at university. As you can see in my picture I am a happy person.

My school is called the Sint-Ignatius Gymnasium. There are about 700 pupils. To complete your education at a gymnasium in Holland you have to attend school for 6 years. I teach the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth year now, but this changes every year. This year my school existed 110 years, so we had a year with a lot of special celebrations.
